《我们的未来》讲述的更像是“我们的过去”，电影由男主偶然记起并联系多年没联系的高中好友展开，穿插着过去的回忆。一开始还以为是遭遇中年危机的男人重温青春拾起对生活的勇气，结果影片最后15分钟揭示了之前的所有疑问、隐喻和不安情绪。 “好友”对高中时代派对的执念、想要回到过去的执念实际上是男主从来没真正接受过事实的投射，心里始终后悔不舍所以无法过好“未来”的生活，也呼应了开头引用的菲茨杰拉德的句子。电影将现实和幻想、未来和过去打乱重新排列，是用没品喜剧伪装的略悲伤的故事
